When Bunion Surgery is NOT an Option, Foot First offers a Non-Surgical Conservative Option

Do you have painful bunions? Are you interested in having your bunions surgically removed using the Swiss Compression Technique but are unable to take time off from your busy schedule? For instance . . .
Are you a golfer and it’s golfing season? Are you unable to take time or any days off of work whatsoever? Are you trying to lose weight and unable to miss a workout?
The doctors at Foot First PodiatryA Foot & Ankle Center, have created an extremely thorough, non-surgical treatment plan to help relieve the pressure and pain caused by your deformity. Our goal is to convert a painful irritated bunion into one that is well-managed and comfortable until you are ready for surgery. Please note, however, that these measures are not a permanent cure. Your bunions are bone deformities that do not resolve by themselves. A non-surgical approach works well for those who want surgery but the timing is not quite right.
Our non-surgical treatment for corrective care include:
  • Shoe gear modification and wearing supportive shoes: Asics, Nike Pegasus, or Salomons are among the shoe brands we recommend.
  • An orthotic: a custom-made arch support worn in your shoes. The orthotic will provide support to the structures of the foot (bones, muscles, and ligaments) and will balance your feet while walking. By supporting the muscular imbalance of the foot, we may be able to slow the progression of the bunion deformity.
  • Taping: Taping helps support the foot, taking stress away from the inflamed area and limiting motion across the joints.
  • An anti-inflammatory cortisone injection into the area to help relieve some of the discomfort and inflammation.
Contact us to set up a consult with one of our doctors. Dr. Keith Sklar, Dr. Nicholas Ruckman and Dr. Samantha Sklar will take the time to get to know you, offer suggestions on both non-surgical and surgical options, and happily address all questions and concerns you may have. Call 847.352.9221. We look forward to meeting you.
